Alphabus /Manchester International Festival, Great Northern Warehouse, Manchester/July 2019

This new work commissioned for Manchester International Festival saw the poetry collective Young Identity collaborate with FlexN and Manchester dancers to explore the myth of Icarus through spoken word and street dance. The performance took place in Unit 5, Great Northern Warehouse, and the design split the industrial space in two, creating a traverse stage, raised at either end and split in the middle, creating a playground of dynamic levels and spaces for the dancers and poets to explore. The performance took place in intimate proximity to the audience, with speeches delivered from ladders jutting up from the crowd, or from raised platforms that doubled as audience seating. A split across the centre stage, bridged by a narrow walkway created a focal point upon which the conflicts between father and son, truth and lies played out.
